The effect of lactoferrin on oral bacterial attachment
Abstract
Introduction: Lactoferrin (Lf), an iron-binding salivary glycoprotein, plays an important role in innate defense against mucosal infection. We hypothesized that Lf interferes with initial oral bacterial attachment by iron sequestration, inhibiting subsequent biofilm formation.
Results: Lf inhibited the initial attachment of S. gordonii by 50.3% (P < 0.05). Dual-species biofilm attachment was reduced by 48.7–62.1% (P < 0.05) in the presence of Lf.
Conclusion: Lf suppresses initial bacterial attachment by iron sequestration, inhibiting oral biofilm development.

A Novel Postbiotic Reduces Canine Halitosis
Abstract
A majority of dogs suffer from periodontal disease, manifesting as halitosis caused by microbes producing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). This double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial evaluated a novel canine oral health postbiotic (COHP) across 24 dogs over 14 days.
Results: COHP decreased VSCs by 22% by Day 7 (p = 0.002). Over the full study, COHP lowered VSC levels by 27% vs. placebo (p = 0.004) and fully prevented an increase in VSCs from baseline. Twice as many dogs had perceptibly improved breath on Day 7.
Conclusion: This novel postbiotic effectively reduces canine oral malodor and provides preliminary evidence it may more broadly maintain canine oral health.
